Exclusive Interview with Master Reza Ghorbani – From a Small Tailoring Shop to Designing Custom Suits

Starting a Career

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your expertise.

I am Reza Ghorbani, a tailor and clothing designer with over 40 years of experience in custom tailoring and suit design. My expertise is in pattern making, custom clothing design, and precise execution of classic and formal clothing. Every garment that leaves my studio is tailored to the client’s body, style, and personality.

How did you get into the world of tailoring?

Tailoring has been passed down from generation to generation in our family, and was passed down to me from my father. I started sewing when I was 10 years old, and sewed my first pair of pants when I was 12. I proudly sewed my name, “Ghorbani,” on the waistband of my pants.
I have always been a seeker of innovation, and this passion has been my driving force in this path.
During my military service, when they asked if anyone knew how to sew, I volunteered. After testing my skills, I sewed clothes for the commander. After that, they gave me a small workshop, which I gradually expanded by equipping it and adding modern machines.
At the age of 18, this was a great achievement for me, teaching me how to build a professional business from scratch.

Who was your role model in this profession?

Through newspapers and magazines, I met a master who I have always admired—
Without a doubt, Master Bijan Pakzad, one of the greatest designers in the world, was my role model. His work philosophy was based on quality, attention to detail, and creating luxurious and unique clothes. I have also put these principles at the forefront of my work.

What challenges have you faced in your professional path?

Challenges have definitely always been there. But with the lessons I have learned from my masters, my mindset has become to accept challenges, focus on solutions, and overcome them.
By the grace of God, I have always been able to successfully navigate this difficult path.

What sets you apart from others?

I believe that a tailor should always be learning. I try to learn something new every day and get inspiration from everywhere.
To get acquainted with the best styles and techniques from around the world, I have attended fashion and textile fairs in various countries, including Italy, India, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Dubai.
Events such as Istanbul Fashion Fair, Ege Textile Fair in Izmir, Dubai International Textile Fair, ITME India in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, Milano Unica as well as Texworld and Première Vision in Paris, and Fiera Milano in Milan have provided me with invaluable opportunities to get acquainted with the latest trends and techniques.
These experiences have helped me to always be one step ahead in my career and implement global innovations in my work.

What have been the most special orders you have had so far?

To date, I have had the honor of sewing clothes for many famous people.
If I were to name just one, in 2020 I had the honor of designing and sewing a suit for the great actor, Behrouz Vosoughi, in person.

How has collaborating with well-known figures affected your work?

My mission in this profession is to raise the level of clothing in my country.
Well-dressed people, whether they are actors, politicians, or diplomats, help achieve this goal and play a role in promoting a culture of authentic and stylish clothing.
The more conscious and well-groomed people dress, the higher their social status and self-confidence will be.

What advice do you have for those who want to enter this profession?

Today, due to market principles and supply and demand, the tailoring industry is almost saturated and there is little room for newcomers to enter.
But those who specialize in specific and rare skills still have a chance.
My advice is to dedicate at least 36 months to deep learning and professional practice before seriously entering the job market.
